What is GIS?

Newton County GIS was formed by an intergovernmental agreement between the:
City of Covington
Newton County Board of Commissioners
Newton County Water and Sewer Authority
The purpose of this Union was to make possible the development of a state of the art Geographic Information System or GIS.
This was necessary in order to improve the ability of these agencies to respond in a rapidly changing environment.
NCGIS uses high-resolution digital Aerial photography, ground control, and computer databases to model Newton County's diverse issues.
Most of the time, what you see from GIS is an advanced map referencing contours, Aerial photography, roads, streams, and mandated human conditions (zoning, ownership, use, etc.)
NCGIS maintains the following datasets:
Tax Parcels (Polygon geometry and database)
Contours (2 ft. change in elevation)
Aerials (1=100 6 inch pixels)
Planimetry (buildings, edge of pavement, etc.)
Streams, Rivers, Lakes and Ponds
Zoning and Future Land Use
Cemeteries Roads
