FAIRY HOUSES AT CHIMNEY PARK:
A TOUR OF ENCHANTING HOMES
May 2, 2009 2-5 P.M.

A magical tour of tiny fairy houses built of all natural materials is planned for Saturday, May 2nd, at Chimney Park, sponsored by Friends of Newton Parks. Attendees are invited to bring their own gathered materials, such as nuts, bark, berries, lichen-covered twigs, rocks and sturdy leaves and learn how to make their own fairy houses for yard or garden. Enjoy crafts, stories about fairies, a parade of fairy-costumed children, music and a springtime gathering’ round the May Pole.

“Fairy festivals are a much-beloved tradition in New England and in Maine where these little houses ‘magically’ appear on the coast or in the woodlands,” said event chair Kathie Smith. “We believe this will be the first such festival to be staged in Georgia, and Chimney Park – where imagination and creativity thrive – will be the perfect setting for such a gathering. It will be a day for the young and young-at-heart to experience the magic of exploring the natural hideaways where fairies work their magic.”

To spread the word about the lure of fairies and their enchanting abodes, Friends of Newton Parks has presented a selection of books about fairies and their houses to all elementary and middle schools in Newton County. Included is the groundbreaking book by Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, whose research definitively establishes the benefits of involving children with nature in the out-of-doors, a central tenet that inspires Chimney Park.

Fairy houses will be placed at all the schools, and media specialists will be promoting the material in the weeks leading up to the event. Numbers of local civic organizations, businesses and various entities are signing up to create the fairy homes that will be settled into a fairy village at Chimney Park. The Potting Shed will have an exhibit of plants, flowers and shrubs that are affiliated by lore and history with various types of fairies.
