Sheriff's Office Department of the Month

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office was selected as April’s Department of the Month by Chairman Marcello Banes.

Banes announced the department during the Board of Commissioner’s public meeting on April 4. Many Sheriff’s Office employees were on hand to be recognized personally, and the office’s color guard presented the American Flag during the meeting’s Pledge of Allegiance.

This month’s announcement was just one of several accolades for the Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), which is on the verge of receiving its biggest yet.

This summer, the NCSO is expected to be recognized with the prestigious National Sheriff’s Association Triple Crown Award. That award is given to a sheriff’s office which receives the three major accreditations. Currently, there are just four sheriff’s offices in the state of Georgia and 55 in the nation with this recognition.

The NCSO became eligible for this prestigious honor after being accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in March.

The CALEA accreditation, which is valid for four years, was a lengthy process in which the NCSO undertook on-site standards compliance assessment during a visit from CALEA Nov. 28-30.

The CALEA accreditation is the third for the NCSO, which also holds a National Commission on Correctional Heath Care accreditation and American Correction Association accreditation, along with a Georgia State Certification.

The NCSO currently employs 260 members constantly on patrol and staffing the Newton County Correctional Facility.

The NCSO performs several community outreach events throughout the year, including a citizen firearms safety event coming up May 6. The NCSO also hosts an annual back-to-school supply drive and toy drive and giveaway in December.
