Straight-line winds caused Mansfield damage; tornado touched down in northern Newton County
According to the National Weather Service a F1 tornado touched down in northern Newton County and strong straight-line winds caused damage in the Mansfield and Newborn area this week.
Monday evening, Newton County Emergency Services responded to damage in downtown Mansfield and parts of Newborn as trees were toppled and part of Hays Tractor Supply was blown onto Highway 11. Area residents were without power for approximately one day.
Thursday, National Weather Service personel surveyed the area and determined there were no indications of a circular pattern of wind damage. It was deemed that straight line wind, approximately 95 miles per hour, caused the damage.
While that incident was determiend not to be a tornado touch-down, damage in northern Newton County, near Walton County on Wakaponeta Trail and surrounding areas, was. Residents in that area were also without power Wednesday.
An F1 Tornado with winds between 90 and 100 miles an hour was declared to have struck the area.
