The Newton County Board of Commissioners Covington, Georgia is seeking candidates for the Fire Chief of Newton County Fire Services position. The Fire Chief is responsible for planning, coordination, and implementation of fire and rescue for Newton County. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, management and supervision, developing policies and procedures, developing fiscal and capital budgets, representing the department at public functions, responding to emergencies, performing inspections, providing training, and performing additional tasks as assigned. Daily activities focus on managing Fire Suppression and Rescue, Fire Marshal and Prevention, and the Hazardous Materials Response and Training Divisions. This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions.
Newton County is home to over 100,000 residents, employs 615 employees, 49 part-time. It is a captivating community with an engaged citizenry located 35 miles of Atlanta. Newton County endeavors to be a world-class County, providing exceptional, consistent customer service. The County is governed by an elected Board of Commissioners consisting of a full-time Chairman who is elected “at large” and five District Commissioners. The Fire Chief is responsible for about 80 full time positions; a headquarters facility, seven station locations operating 24/7; and an FY16 operating budget of $5.5M.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Qualified applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree in public administration, fire science, business administration or a closely related field with ten years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Qualified applicants must also have five years of supervisory experience; a valid Driver's License; and be able to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association, and the Georgia Fire-fighter Standards and Training Act.
Final candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment process that includes a thorough background investigation of employment, educational history, driving history, and criminal history; as well as a pre-employment drug test.
