The injunction on Newton County’s removal of the Confederate monument in the Covington Square was continued Monday by Newton County Chief Judge John Ott.
Ott ordered Newton County and the two plaintiffs to file briefs in 14 days for his ruling. The briefs, or documents containing legal arguments and citations of authority, will be on the issues of legal standing and sovereign immunity.
Judge Ott will issue his ruling after reading the briefs, with no oral arguments required.
The County has agreed to maintain the status quo, in reference to not removing the Confederate monument until a ruling has been filed and appeals have been decided, if such action is taken.
